April 25, 2026BIGGEST GOVERNMENT WEBSITE REVAMPS IN HISTORY

In 2023, NASA embarked on a monumental overhaul of its digital infrastructure, consolidating over 1,000+ public-facing websites into a unified system. Just like its space missions, the space agency’s web presence had evolved into a sprawling multiplex of platforms that included Drupal, custom CMSs, and legacy systems. The complexity of the management was old and inefficient.
NASA’s transition to WordPress wasn’t just a facelift—it was a full-scale mission-critical migration. We’ll look at why WordPress became their choice, which strategies were applied to this NASA migration and how they managed to create a future-proof tech stack capable of handling millions of visitors during rocket launches.
WHAT WAS WRONG WITH NASA’S OLD SYSTEM?
the NASAs web infrastructure was facing issues of;
Content Duplication – Since there were many sites providing information on similar issues, it became complicated for people to decide which piece of information was correct.
Complex management: different teams used different platforms, and the process of updating the content took a lot of time.
Lack of Accessibility: Many of NASA’s older websites were not adequately adherent to modern web accessibility standards.
Scalability Issues: During major space events (e.g., rocket launches), NASA’s sites experienced traffic surges that resulted in downtime and slow load times.
After spending a year and looking into more than 100 CMS options, NASA chose to make a strategic move and unify everything on WordPress.
WHY WORDPRESS?

NASA needed a solution that was flexible, scalable, and easy to use. WordPress met all the requirements:
1. Open Source Advantage: No vendor lock-in, ongoing innovation, strong community support.
2. Gutenberg Block Editor: Drag-and-drop editing for non-tech teams.
3. Enterprise Scalability: Can handle traffic surges.
4. Accessibility Compliance: Meets WCAG 2.1 AA and Section 508 standards.
5. Robust API Ecosystem: Supports integrations with NASA’s internal tools.
Now, let’s break down the five key strategies NASA used to ensure a successful migration.
Why NASA Trusted WordPress for Its Latest Website ?
Originally built on Drupal, NASA decided nearly two years ago to rethink the CMS (Content Management System) for their website. During the discovery phase, the website editors expressed a desire for a system that didn’t rely on rigid templates. They wanted more flexibility in designing the nearly 70,000 posts and pages on the NASA website. After evaluating hundreds of CMS solutions, four stood out. To determine which one they preferred, NASA created identical prototype websites on each platform and had users test them.
Three factors made WordPress stand out:
1. **Access to Resources**: WordPress is open source and supported by a large community of programmers, authors, and content developers. With a commercial system, one has to rely on developers for any questions or issues.
2. **Flexible Plugin Ecosystem**: The plugin ecosystem is diverse and flexible, allowing authors to analyze content before publishing it.
3. **User-Friendly Content Creation**: WordPress’s built-in Gutenberg block editing system allows web designers to create great content, although the transition to it wasn’t easy for everyone. Significant time was dedicated to providing hands-on training for web designers who needed extra help. An open discussion environment was fostered to ensure everyone received the support they required.
On a personal note: I find the block editor difficult. I am used to years of working with Divi’s visual building and block editor!
Inside NASA’s Use of WordPress for Open Source Promotion
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration has been a leading force in science and technology since it started in 1958, boldly exploring areas no one has ventured into before.
NASA has created technology that is not only used in space exploration but also in the private sector. This includes everything from the moon landing and GPS systems to better breast cancer testing procedures.
Did you know that NASA is also involved in the open source community?
Before moving to their new site, the agency used WordPress widely on multiple sites like open.nasa.gov, data.nasa.gov, and code.nasa.gov. The open.NASA site ran on a combination of LAMP and WordPress with a modified version of the Protean theme. NASA even encouraged users to clone the theme if they wanted.
In June 2011, NASA opened a public repository on GitHub to share its World Wind Java project with the open source community. To date, there are 17 public repositories on NASA’s GitHub. Visitors can access all of NASA’s open source code there.
This enthusiasm for open source and WordPress within the organization made me curious about why their main site, NASA.gov, doesn’t use WordPress. I reached out to Sean Herron, a Technology Strategist at NASA headquarters, to ask him.
“The agency does use WordPress extensively,” Sean replied. “The main nasa.gov site is very large and complex, and it predates WordPress by several years. There is currently a plan to move the NASA.gov content management system to an open source platform. However, with tens of thousands of pages to transition, this change won’t happen overnight.”
What Makes WordPress a Top Choice for Organizations Like NASA
1.Introduction
WordPress CMS
In the expanding online world, WordPress CMS has become the leading choice for websites of all types and sizes. Initially a blogging tool, WordPress has transformed into a flexible Content Management System (CMS) that supports a large portion of the internet. Recently, even NASA, the largest space agency, decided to revamp their website using the WordPress system.
But why do prominent organizations like NASA choose WordPress over other options? In this article, we will explore the benefits of using WordPress and its scalability, providing insights into why this platform is a preferred choice for various websites.
2.Advantages of Using WordPress CMS

2.2 Abundant Themes and Plugins
WordPress has a vast library of themes and plugins that make customization easy. Whether you want a professional or creative look, you can find a theme that fits your style. Theme designers typically ensure these themes are mobile responsive, so your website looks great on different devices.
The wide range of plugins available for WordPress is another major benefit. These plugins enhance your website’s functionality, enabling you to add e-commerce solutions, social media sharing tools, contact forms, and more. Whatever your website’s purpose, there’s likely a plugin that can help you achieve your goals.

For those who are budget-conscious, WordPress is a blessing. It’s an open-source platform, meaning it’s free to use and modify. This helps keep costs low while establishing your online presence. While there may be costs for themes, plugins, and hosting, the total cost is still much lower than custom development or other CMS options.
WordPress’s cost-effectiveness extends beyond the initial setup. With many free themes and plugins available, you can achieve high functionality without incurring extra costs. This affordability enables small businesses, bloggers, non-profits, and individuals to create professional websites without a large financial investment.

For news sites, online magazines, and popular blogs, this scalability is essential to keep the site responsive and accessible, even during busy periods.
3.2 E-commerce Capabilities
If you plan to run an online store, WordPress can meet your needs. With e-commerce plugins like WooCommerce, you can turn your WordPress site into a powerful and user-friendly online shop. This scalability is why many successful online businesses use WordPress to manage their stores and customer transactions.
WooCommerce stands out as a strong e-commerce solution. It offers many features, from inventory management and secure payment processing to customizable product listings and shipping options. Whether you’re a small boutique or a large online retailer, WordPress can scale to meet your e-commerce needs.
